Despite killing, burning and burying the old her, Katy Perry’s new single “Roar” sounds like everything else she’s done—infectious, generic pop fodder. It took five people to write the rudimentary, cliché lyrics—Perry, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee and Henry Walter.

The “E.T.” singer has conceptualized her intense obsession with cats for Prism, her forthcoming album. Promotional efforts for “Roar,” the album’s lead single, incorporates felines in various ways, and it couldn’t be more contrived. (Well, actually, it can.)
On the ’80s-inspired cover art for “Roar,” Katy wears a jacket with a roaring tiger head on the back. Also, the “O” in “Roar” is a shiny, double-headed tiger ring (or something).
Alicia Keys dressed rather appropriately at the after party for Tommy Hilfiger’s West Hollywood store opening. The Grammy-winning singer wore a red knee-length dress by the designer for the occasion. Keys’ husband Swizz Beatz matched an off-white blazer and black trousers with dark grey shoes.
Epic Records chairman and CEO L.A. Reid was honored at Clive Davis & The Recording Academy’s 2013 Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
Clive paid tribute to Whitney Houston, who tragically passed in the very hotel a year prior, by sharing a rare video of his mentee singing “All the Man That I Need” during a tribute concert for the troops. “She was the greatest contemporary singer of our lifetime,” Davis said. He extended an invitation to Whitney’s mother Cissy Houston, but she deemed the gesture “obscene” and refused to attend.
First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are hosting the “Kids’ Inaugural: Our Children. Our Future,” which honors and celebrates the service and sacrifice of our US military. Usher, Katy Perry and fun. are billed as celebrity performers, and Nick Cannon is emceeing the event.
President Obama’s second inauguration may be smaller than his first, but the star power is just as bright. Beyoncé was hand-selected by POTUS himself to sing the national anthem, Kelly Clarkson will perform “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and James Taylor will sing ‘America the Beautiful.”

Billboard hosted a gala in celebration of the issue, and the “Firework” singer delivered a facetious speech when accepting the award.
