Katy Perry Kills, Burns & Buries ‘Teenage’ Image
If you thought Alicia Keys’ pyromania was bad, wait until you meet Katy Perry’s ailuromania.
The “E.T.” singer has conceptualized her intense obsession with cats for Prism, her forthcoming album. Promotional efforts for “Roar,” the album’s lead single, incorporates felines in various ways, and it couldn’t be more contrived. (Well, actually, it can.)
On the ’80s-inspired cover art for “Roar,” Katy wears a jacket with a roaring tiger head on the back. Also, the “O” in “Roar” is a shiny, double-headed tiger ring (or something).

In a teaser called “From a Meow to a Roar,” a fluffy white cat swallows a toy bird whole, then lets out a huge roar. Apparently, the symbolism is in the same vein as the prior two teaser videos, which shows Katy burying and burning her old image.
In theory, I’m sure Katy & Co. thought this concept was flawless, but for me, it confirms that her act has been just that—an act, and that she feeds off mindless souls. If that’s what she was going for, then it’s indeed flawless; otherwise, I’d suggest lowering the opacity on the cryptic, but not-so-cryptic, honesty.
If you’re anticipating “New Kat-y Perry’s” new music, which will likely sound like “Old Katy Perry’s” generic pop fodder, “Roar” is set to disturb the peace on August 12th.
