  • Mixtape: Melody Thornton – ‘P.O.Y.B.L. (Piss On Your Black List)’

    Fri, Mar 16th, 2012 |  6 Comments »

Former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, 27, has left the pride and is journeying on a solo career. Her explosive rendition of “Love Gun” attracted the ear of many listeners; now, she’s offering a complete project to reintroduce herself to the industry and her fans.

Thornton describes her style as “soul-pop” and exemplifies the styling over 10 tracks, all of which she wrote (aside from one cover).

“Piss On Your Black List has nothing to do with being a rebel or fighting against anything. It has everything to do with fighting for myself,” says Thornton. “It’s clever with attitude. It’s kind of funny and gets a strong reaction; all things that, at times, describe my art.”

Album Review: Goapele ‘Break Of Dawn’

    Thu, Oct 27th, 2011 |  3 Comments »

After a 6-year hiatus, Bay Area soulstress Goapele is back with her fourth studio album Break of Dawn, the follow-up to 2005′s Change It All. Dawn, formerly titled Milk & Honey, is being released via Skyblaze and Decon Records. Malay, Kerry “Krucial” Brothers and Drumma Boy are among the producers who contributed to the album. Dan Electric and Teddy Thunderbolt are responsible for the album’s official first single “Play.”

“One of my goals for the newest project Break of Dawn was to be more uninhabited,” she explains. “I came into this business as a young woman who wanted to be taken seriously for my music, but, now I’m more willing to share my sexiness as well. I realize that it’s possible to be both complex and provocative.”

Break of Dawn opens with sensual tunes “Play” and “Tears On My Pillow” (Bobby Ozuna & Kerry “Krucial” Brothers). One track deals with Goapele “playing” with her lover, where the following deals with her spilling feelings of sorrow on her pillow. Even when singing about heartbreak, her vocals are stimulating. EP Review: Bridget Kelly ‘Every Girl’

    Thu, Oct 20th, 2011 |  Leave A Comment »

It’s not often that R&B fanatics are introduced to an act and afforded the opportunity to watch as he/she develops and grows into their artistry…at least not in recent years. Our new artists are often thrown out in the industry jungle, without perfected craft and direction, and left to exercise “trial-and-error” when, instead, a confident and well-worked product should be at the hands of listeners (See: J.Cole/Jay-Z Cole World development).

Bridget Kelly is, fortunately, an entity to keep an eye out for-considering her years of experience away from the spotlight, honing her skill and the direction she’s taking from Roc Nation‘s boss, Jay-Z. The NYC-native released her EP, Every Girl, just yesterday and the eight-track set carves out a lane for Bridget on the Roc Nation roster.

Mixtape Review: Chris Brown ‘Boy In Detention’

    Fri, Aug 5th, 2011 |  3 Comments »

Chris Brown laughs in the face of adversity by playing off of the “bad boy” image he’s rallied up with his newly released mixtape, Boy In Detention. Even the title suggests that you’re preparing to listen to a rebel on wax.

    Album Review: Beyoncé 4

    Tue, Jun 7th, 2011 |  49 Comments »

Beyoncé returns with a vengeance on her fourth studio album - 4. While putting the finishing touches on it, Bey revealed the album would boast an immense amount of sounds and instruments. Her words were accurate. 12 tracks and they all are uniquely different. Kanye West, Consequence, The-Dream, Babyface, Ryan Tedder, Switch, Jeff Bhasker, Diane Warren, Shea Taylor and Symbolyc One all man the production boards on the project.

Surprisingly, the overall album doesn’t have a techno/urban sound - it leans more towards an R&B/Hip-Hop album; what I (and many others) have yearned for from Beyoncé.
