XXLhas unveiled their 2012 Freshman Class issue, exposing the annual controversial list of budding hip-hop acts. Many artists, including Tyler of Odd Future, downplays the validity of XXL’s Freshman list, claiming it doesn’t effectively showcase rising talent.
Half of the list is comprised of widely-known acts including Machine Gun Kelly, Future, RoscoeDash, FrenchMontana and Iggy Azalea. The other half is of lesser-known rappers: Danny Brown, KidInk, Hopsin, Macklemore and Don Trip.
In congruous with every other major list, fans of artists that aren’t included on the list deem the list invalid. This year, the artists themselves have publicly lashed out at XXL and rappers that made the list. Most notable is Azaelia Banks‘ displeasure with Grand Hustle affiliate Iggy Azalea making the list (who also happens to be the first woman to grace the cover).
