By: | December 20th, 2011

In approximately 5 weeks, Drake has managed to ship over 1 million units of his sophomore album, Take Care-a feat not taking lightly, in lieu of his album’s early leak and the piracy plague of today. The emcee has much to be excited about, for the album skipped the sophomore jinx and is on track to sell just as well as his debut, Thank Me Later.

Just last week, the album had sold about 968,000 copies, but this week moved over 75,000 more-giving the Toronto-native much glory. With success in music, will Drizzy dig back into acting…Fresh Like Dougie says yes.

Maya Angelou “Had No Idea” Common Would Use The N-Word On “The Dreamer”

By: | December 19th, 2011

Surely Common is taken away from his celebration to respectively receive his backlashing from media mogul, Maya Angelou, who appears on the opening/title track, “The Dreamer“, of his latest album-The Dreamer, The Believer. Apparently, Miss Angelou wasn’t aware that on the same track that she’d be offering her resounding sentiments, ‘Common Sense’ would be dropping the “N-Bomb”.

“I had no idea that Common was using the piece we had done together on [a track] in which he also used the ‘N’ word numerous times. I’m surprised and disappointed. I don’t know why he chose to do that. I had never heard him use that [word] before. I admired him so because he wasn’t singing the line of least resistance.”

However, the veteran emcee doesn’t really feel bad, claiming that Angelou had been informed the audience he wanted to reach. Read it below…

Ashanti Signs Distribution & Label Services Deal With eOne Music

By: | December 16th, 2011
Ashanti promo iamboigenius

Ashanti undeniably conquered urban radio in the early 2000s. After the lackluster performance of her latest album, The Declaration (2008), the “Princess Of Hip-Hop & R&B” took time away from the spotlight. Since, she has left Irv Gotti’s The Inc. Records and ventured out on her own with Written Entertainment, a label under eOne Music.

The Jerry Wonder-produced “The Woman You Love,” featuring Busta Rhymes, is the first single released under the partnership. It was released days ago and is available on iTunes for purchase.

President of eOne Music Alan Grunblatt spoke on the partnership:

“eOne is proud to have a partnership with Ashanti and her label Written Entertainment. Ashanti truly has the independent entrepreneurial attitude that eOne was built on, and we’re thrilled to be working with her.”

Ashanti also spoke on her new independent venture,

“I’m so excited to have my own record label, Written Entertainment. With eOne as my distributor, I feel that their innovative and ambitious approach to the music industry, really gives my label a worldwide presence. They have the top radio people in the business and are hungry to win! The more I learned the business the more I knew this is what I wanted. Ownership is so important. As a business woman this was a great move for me!”

With a new independent deal and infectious new single, can Ashanti transcend back to the top?

Report: Is Keyshia Cole’s Label Over Her And Her Antics?

By: | December 15th, 2011

As an artist, starting a family could mean one or two things for their core audience: a revamped image and passion-filled music after time spent away or unmastered and underwhelming material due to surrounding pressures. For Keyshia Cole, fans and her label are wondering which is to come with the release of her fifth studio album. Reports are saying that Keyshia’s label, A&M Records under Universal Music Group, are getting tired of the “Long Way Down” singer.

This popular R&B singer’s record label is just about at the end of their rope with their superstar who has blown through her album budget and repeatedly delayed the delivery of her album due to personal issues.

The label’s execs have been overhead telling friends that the singer blew through her album’s budget — which she received in 2010 — and she has yet to deliver a completed album on time. “We gave her a [recording] budget and she spent all the money, and now she’s doing a reality show,” said one label exec who begged to remain anonymous.

The recording exec speculated that the singer has put the project on the back burner because it is the final album in her 5 album contract with the label.

Alicia Keys Nears Completion Of New Album, Hits The Studio With Darkchild

By: | December 15th, 2011

Award-winning producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins anxiously and enthusiastically prepared for his meeting with Alicia Keys. He listened to her recent singles including “Empire State of Mind,” “Un-Thinkable” and “Doesn’t Mean Anything” to get into ‘Alicia Keys mode’.

Over the years, Alicia has revealed her admiration for Prince on numerous occasions. Darkchild recognized her inspiration for the legendary musician on “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart,” a single Alicia worked closely with Jeff Bhasker to craft. He tweeted, “So 80′s!!!! Prince melodies and synths yet with hip hop undertones,” when describing the song.

Days later, he revealed he was ‘focused and vibing’ in Keys’ New York studio, channeling his inner Quincy Jones. Tweeting that sent adoring Keys fans into an excited uproar. Until her recent Good Morning America interview with Robin Roberts, where she revealed, “we got a couple more months and we’re ready to fly,” Alicia has been relatively silent regarding her fifth album.

Apparently the duo became quite acquainted following their meeting. After their studio session, they went out for sushi at Alicia’s favorite sushi spot.

Darkchild has crafted classic R&B/Pop songs for the likes of Brandy, Monica and Mary J. Blige. Will he do the same with Alicia Keys?

Ruben Studdard Promo

American Idol winner Ruben Studdard makes a triumphant return to the music scene with “Rock Wit’cha,” a cover of Bobby Brown’s 1989 classic hit. It serves as the lead single from Ruben’s Letters From Birmingham, his upcoming album due out on March 11, 2012, via Sanachie Records.

Ruben credits Martin Luther King, Jr. for the inspiration behind the concept of the album.

“Martin Luther King Jr. had this famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail and being from Birmingham, I’ve read it so many times. We were going through the Atlanta airport one day and they have this display for Martin Luther King Jr. and it just struck me to do the album as letters. Harold [Lilly]said he thought that it would be a tight concept. So after that we kind of made all of the songs into a letter concept. ”

Jazzy soulstress Chrisette Michelle appears on the 11-track set, specifically on the pulsating “Tonight.”

“I’m a huge fan of Chrisette since her first album,” Studdard says. “When I heard that song I instantly said her name because it has that jazzy feel to it and I knew she would do it justice.”
