Although Aaliyah never knew Drake existed, he has convinced himself that with the help of his producer, Noah “40” Shebib, he is the best person to present unheard music from her to the public. Contrary to reports, he claims (until the Haughton family releases a statement saying otherwise, Drake’s comments are mere unconfirmed claims) her family agrees and supports his idea of a posthumous album.
Earlier this year, Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, stated “there is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family.” As we know, legally, they don’t hold any rights to her music, so their input isn’t a prerequisite. However, it would behoove someone trying to release her music to seek the endorsement of those who knew her best.
In an interview with MuchMusic, Drake asserts, “people should be excited” to hear her voice on “13-14 new songs.” Drake realizes fans of Aaliyah would love to hear anything she recorded, so he plays on their emotions. Clearly money isn’t the motive, considering he has acquired a grand amount of success with his suicide-inducing music. He just wants to be known as the ‘guy who released new Aaliyah music to the world following her death’.
Elsewhere in the interview, he deemed himself and 40 as the best men for the job. This is utter disrespect to the people who are known for producing some of her best (official) work, who he “hopes” will get involved with the project.
Let’s put this in perspective: Drake expects Timbaland and Missy to work under him on an Aaliyah album. WTF?
