…according to a lot of tweeters.
After raising millions of dollars and awareness for AIDS in Africa and India at her Keep A Child Alive Black Ball, Alicia Keys tweeted about her disappointment of ’80s pop icon George Michael being a no-show.
“#Blackball Uk was a TREMENDOUS Success!!!! LOVE 2 @Iammarkronson @palomafaith @tinietempah #bethditto @LeighKCA @keepachildalive @boygeorge. but one question…..what kind of person bails on 15million orphans…..#GEORGEMICHEAL???? ;-(.”
Monday (June 13), George explained, via Twitter, he would possibly miss the charity event because of a toothache.
“But speaking of work, have some bad news for UK fans I’m afraid. On the weekend, got some kind of infection in my lower jaw and the left side of my face now resembles a hairy football. I look like Marlon Brando ( I wish….) in the Godfather if they forgot to stuff the right cheek! Anyway the point is I dont know if it will clear up in time for Wednesdays Black Ball Charity event with Alicia Keys… Which would be terrible, I don’t want to let down the charity, which is excellent, and I would love to sing with Alicia, shes wonderful…. I’ll keep you posted for sure though….. xxx”
On the day of the event, Michael tweeted:
“Hi boyz n girls….bad news im afraid. This tooth ain’t getting better in time for tonight, not enough to sing anyway….. :( I’m really sorry folks. You watch, it’ll be totally fine by tomorrow. Bloody typical. I hope not too many of my lovelies managed to grab a ticket :( Of course I’d recommend going anyway, Alicia is great live, and @KeepaChildAlive is great charity to donate to.”
Following Alicia’s tweet, thousands of angry George Michael fans, along with haters, attacked Mrs. Keys for expressing her disappointment so blatantly. Unbeknownst to the sensible tweeters (because they are all that matters), this marks the second time George has cancelled his Keep A Child Alive Black Ball appearance - at the last minute, no less.
While her contemporaries sang about rude boys being able to get “it” up, men loving the way [she] ride “it” and “egos” being to wide and big, Alicia sang about the worth of women. On top of that, she’s intelligent and articulates well. You would think possessing aforementioned traits would be celebrated; however it has consistently proven to be the contrary for Mrs. Keys. She has been placed on such a high pedestal that announcing her disappointments yield negative responses.
Should Alicia apologize for ‘being real’?
Are highly regarded people not allowed to express frustration?
Initially, I didn’t want to cover this; but years after witnessing how loathsome the blogosphere is to esteemed celebrities, I felt it was my duty to publish this.
In the black community, you have to be extraordinary just to be considered ordinary. Those who praise secularity are given an immense amount of leniency to say and do whatever they please without repercussion. As soon as someone of Alicia’s stature express proclivity, judgmental commentators stone him or her.
What are your thoughts on this double standard?

then she shouldn't have invited him after the first time. Simple. but to start calling out folks on Twitter like a common fan is just so home-wreckerish of her
The ending of your statement made everything you said/will say null and void. I didn't realize you were so ignorant.
I’m disappointed in George Michael. Tooth ache or not the least he could do was show up. That’s how a person tarnishes their public image.
Seriously though! Why his publicists, manager, assistants or whoever, failed to contact her team directly? Canceling via Twitter? *cues Ed Lover
