Everyday A Star Is Born: Frank Ocean

For the past couple of months, I’ve asked everyone, “who is Frank Ocean?” I’ve gotten a plethora of responses. I decided to research the rising star, and write a short bio about him.

Recently, 23-year-old singer/songwriter/producer Christopher “Lonny” Breaux, better known as Frank Ocean, has created major waves in the music world.

Unbeknownst to the masses, the superbly talented individual is one part of the hedonistic hip-hop group, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Over the years, Frank has penned songs for Justin Bieber, Brandy and John Legend.

After being signed (and ignored) by Island Def Jam, the singer gave away his debut album, nostalgia, ULTRA., for free via his Tumblr. Following the release of his project, Frank took to Twitter to release his frustrations.

“i. did. this. not ISLAND DEF JAM. that’s why you see no label logo on the artwork that I DID. guess its my fault for trusting my dumbass lawyer and signing my career over to a failing company. fuck Def Jam & any company that goes the length of signing a kid with dreams & talent w/ no intention of following through. fuck em. now back to my day. i want some oatmeal and toast. brunch swag.”

The album received an immense amount of appraisal. Afraid they’d lose this genius, Def Scam Jam put Frank in the studio with one of the greatest entertainers of our time – Beyoncé. With the release of a poorly lit photo, Frank’s acclaim skyrocketed.

Frank is a breath of fresh air. His style is reminiscent of Ryan Leslie and Raphael Saadiq: a fusion of soulful R&B with a side of funk, alternative rock and Hip-Hop. Expect great things from Frank Ocean.
