By: | October 22nd, 2011

Tity Boi, aka 2 Chainz, is one-half of rap duo Playaz Circle, who are signed to Ludacris’ Disturbing The Peace Records and best known for their Lil’ Wayne-assited track “Duffle Bag Boy.”

With the help of his popular mixtape series Codeine Cowboy and hood anthem “Spend It,” the College Park native has made quite the name for himself as a solo artist over the past year. Additionally, his appearance at this year’s BET Cypher has even more listeners asking: “Who is 2 Chainz?”

On not signing as a solo artist to Ludacris’ DTP. “I’ve grown as a person and an artist, I’m really into developing my own imprint and brand. I’ve been under him long enough, It’s definitely no disrespect.”

On T.I. remixing “Spend It.” From my understanding, DJ MLK (T.I.’s DJ) sent Tip an MP3 of my last mixtape codeine cowboy. When he came home, I tried to give it to him personally, but he was still in the halfway house. The actual day I was suppose to take it over there, they called, and I was expressing my respect that I wouldn’t smoke or drink around dude. Then they asked, ‘are you a felon?’ Then crickets started. Then I said, ‘you know what, I’m gonna send my partner over there with it’. He did it in 24 hours and we leaked it.”

Ashanti Covers “I Have Nothing” & “I Will Always Love You” In Malaysia

By: | October 22nd, 2011

The early 2000s saw Ashanti at the pinnacle of her career, boasting a number of features, stupendous album sales, chart-topping singles and a Grammy. Thereafter, label woes, rising competition and a fading genre led the 31-year old into neglect from the public at large. Today, she took the stage during a stop on the David Foster and Friends Tour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and offered an impressive rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing“, as well as “I Will Always Love You“.

As Ashanti is often appreciated more for her music, rather than her vocal performance-she took today’s performance as an opportunity to convince those, like myself, who aren’t familiar of her vocal prowess.

Lithe-voiced R&B songstress Jhené Aiko continues promoting her mixtape Sailing Soul(s) with the video premiere of “My Mine.” Jhené doesn’t have the belting capacity of a Jennifer Hudson or Alicia Keys, but her music is still impactful through soulful lyrics and her emotional delivery.

Similar to artists like Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, Jhene has steadily built a loyal fan base around her independent releases. Watch her latest visual to determine if you are adding her to your gPod.

Dawn Richard & Mateo Thrill At The Roxy In West Hollywood

By: | October 22nd, 2011

With a little push from the likes of Diddy and Alicia Keys, two of R&B’s future starlets-Dawn Richard and Mateo are looking to amplify the sound of a feeble genre, taking to West Hollywood’s The Roxy, along with songwriter Stacy Barthe, for intimate performances of their latest and dearest material.

Both artists are prepping solo efforts, Richard is cooking up a trilogy..beginning with GoldenHeart which was initially set for release this year, but there are no signs of that happening. Mateo is signed to Kerry “Krucial” Brothers’ label, Krucial Noise, and is readying a debut album-including his first single “Say It’s So”, which features Alicia Keys.

Both vocalists and songwriters alike, the two offered mixtapes to the public this year and performed them at the Thursday (Oct. 20) night show. The Prelude to A Tell Tale Heart and Love & Stadiums found solace in the hands of listeners of unmarred music and were at the disposal of the well-receptive crowd as the budding entertainers rocked the house.

Drake’s Lil’ Wayne-Assisted “The Real Her” Surfaces

By: | October 21st, 2011

(Unofficial Cover Art Source)

Drake taps into his appreciated and sometimes irritating R&B side for “The Real Her,” a track featuring Lil’ Wayne. Being a bigger fan of the emotional crooning Drake than the thugged-out rapping Drizzy, I expected more. It falls short of the cleverness of “HoustAtlantaVegas,” impact of “She Will” and likeability of the interludes.

Take Care is scheduled to arrive on November 15th.
