Last week saw the taping of VH1′s cultural showcase, VH1 Divas Celebrate Soul, which featured international, soul-influenced entertainers-divas in particular-delivering odes to some of the greatest music and artists in soul. Jessie J, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Florence + The Machine all took the stage.
Ledisi and Ambrosius, sang a warm rendition of “Sweet Love“, but viewers wondered why the song performance saw the absence of its original artist, Anita Baker. Rumors began to fly about an alleged blow-up between herself and original duet-performer, Jill Scott, that led to Baker’s exit. She took to Twitter earlier to defend her actions to confused fans…
“It was also “said” that Jill Scott did NOT want to perform Anita’s song “Sweet Love” at all – reports are saying. It was also said that she annoyed the production staff but acted like an @ss when she didnt have the song changed and completely ditched Anita at their dress rehearsals among other things.
It was RUMORED that Anita pulled out as a result. There were no blows or arguement; as production staff I have to say that it really was Jill Scott blowing Anita Baker off, Not throwing blows!”
In the name of healthy camaraderie, it’s important to sustain cordial relationships in a slightly harsh industry. With that said, I hope that the well-respected women, both Scott and Baker, can patch up any differences established during a special meant to unite and show gratitude for the regarded genre.
