He introduced the project with the underwhelming “Carry On,” and follows up with the coma-inducing “Looking You Up.” Although the Krucial-produced beat is quite appealing, Mateo’s trippy, coarse, The Weeknd-like delivery is excessively monotonous and distracts from any shining moments of the record. I almost overlooked the silky vocal stylings of Stacy Barthe.
