Like many legendary acts, Toni Braxton has experienced professional and personal highs and lows throughout her extensive career. In the latest installment of VH1’s Behind the Music, the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning superstar discusses being discovered by L.A. Reid and Babyface, filing for bankruptcy (twice), suffering from lupus, having a son with autism and more.
One highlight from the episode is her insinuation that her interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show led to the downfall of her career. She says Oprah was mean to her and practically reprimanded her for overspending. This “scolding” encouraged viewers to condemn her.
From the clip provided, it seems like Oprah was providing Toni with a much-needed reality check by asking valid questions. Oprah has been known for asking what other interviewers are afraid to ask, so why go on a public platform following a very public bankruptcy knowing those questions would potentially arise?
Oprah invited Iyanla Vanzant back to her stage to settle their squabble; maybe she’ll do the same with Toni.
Despite Toni’s obvious lack of taking responsibility for her missteps in her life, it was a good Behind the Music special. They revisited some of Toni’s classics, including her signature hit “Un-Break My Heart.” Surprisingly, Toni wasn’t a fan of the Diane Warren-penned song upon first listen.
