Alicia Keys is a Girl On Fire, and her fiery new single (or duet with Maxwell) has nothing to do with it in this instance. The messy people over at 92Q put the acclaimed musician in the hot seat by asking her: who is the better rapper–Jay-Z or Nas? and who is the better singer–Beyoncé or Mary J. Blige? Her response may shock a few.
Jay-Z or Nas. I will say Nas, but obviously they’re both incredible lyrically. But Nas–for me–goes into a place where he’s able to access concepts and storylines that most people won’t be able to pull together.
Beyoncé or Mary J. I’m gonna go for Bey; I think that she actually has a really (at the heart and core of it all) if you just heard her at a piano or a guitar–it’s really spectacular how she sings.
It seems like the radio station (or whatever 92Q is) wants to create a sound-bite and blow Keys’ statement out of proportion. Alicia has worked with Nas, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige in some capacity, so it’s highly unlikely that malice or disrespect was intended when giving her honest opinion.
She also sat down with another interviewer to further speak on her recently announced duet with Maxwell called “Fire We Make.”
