Melanie Fiona, Ne-Yo and Swizz Beatz celebrated the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s Bad at New York’s Gotham Hall. Coincidentally, the event was held on the late singer’s 54th birthday.
Ne-Yo, who incorporates much of MJ’s magic in his music, imitated the King of Pop by performing “Smooth Criminal.” Like most recent tributes to MJ, Ne-Yo’s was dreadful. He slightly recovered, with the help of RaVaughn Brown, with his take on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” He fully recovered by returning to his comfort zone–his own songs.
Melanie, on the other hand, did well covering my favorite Michael song–“Dirty Diana.” Unfortunately, “Bad” was indeed bad. Rock-tinged records seem to be Mel’s niche, as indicated by the performances of ‘Diana’, “Change The Record” and “Watch Me Work.” The newly blonde bombshell brought it home with her heart-wrenching ballad, “Wrong Side of a Love Song.”
