For years, fans and critics alike have doubted Alicia Keys’ vocal chops… and rightfully so. Onlookers have witnessed Alicia scream notes throughout some of her live showings. Many barked claims that the decorated songstress’ voice had deteriorated, and she was forced to rely on her classical piano-playing prowess and skillful background singers as a crutch during live performances.
Last year, in celebration of songs in A minor’s tenth anniversary, Keys held an intimate showcase featuring only her trusty piano. Though it streamed online, “Piano and I” went relatively unnoticed and the masses failed to recognize the homecoming of her powerhouse vocals of yesteryear.
Next Thursday, she will debut her empowering new single, “Girl On Fire,” on a much bigger platform than her intimate showcase–the MTV VMAs. Leading up to the debut of the single and the VMAs, Alicia has exhibited much more than a new look, but also newfound confidence (her edgy haircut and spicier image are two of the many indicators).
“My hands are on the keys, tonight you will feel the power of my voice,” she subtly boasts. “Watch me reveal what’s within. I’ll show you everything… This is the moment.”
In the preview below, Alicia belts a portion of the hook. Hopefully, she translates those recorded notes fluidly during the live rendition.
“Girl On Fire” is expected to drop on September 4th, followed by the album with the same namesake on November 27th.
