Kid Cudi was discovered following the release of his acclaimed 2008 mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi. Since, the alternative rapper-turned-rocker has ceased from releasing any unofficial projects. During an interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood, CuDi explains why he loathes mixtapes.
“We never really done mixtapes, because I just feel like it’s a waste of time,” he explains. “You know when someone goes in to do a mixtape their mindset is instantly like ‘I’m not trying to make the best music here, I’m just trying to make something to satisfy the people’. We don’t really like that, we kind of go in the studio and think album instantly.”

He also explains the meaning behind WZRD, his stage name with Dot Da Genius.
“I heard this Black Sabbath song called ‘Wizard’ and it’s about their drug dealer ultimately,” he says. “So this mysterious man that comes around spreading cheer to everyone and brings everybody’s spirits up. Ultimately we take that same theme and we kind of feel like we’re the wizards of music like we just come around and bring good vibes and try to evoke some type of emotion.”
