Are you a believer of speaking your destiny into existence?
Budding songstress Emeli Sandé, 24, believes. The Scottish singer, whose first name is Adele, discovered Alicia Keys in her teenage years, identified with her because of their similar backgrounds and hoped to one day play her music for the superwoman.
“She was mixed race like me, a great student who’d been top of her class, who played piano and loved Nina Simone,” she tells YOU.
As we know, artists as authentic as Keys often go unheard; they are shadowed by their generic counterparts. 14 Grammys later, Alicia continues to persevere. Emeli admires that Alicia has managed to gain notoriety without complying to industry standards or popular expectation.
“There she was in the pop charts, yet with songs that had a message. I saw 16,000 people hanging on her every word and thought, ‘I want this kind of attention. I want Alicia to know my music.’ “
Alicia indeed became familiar with Sandé. She co-signed Emeli as an emerging talent in Dazed & Confused, and shared Emeli’s music with her millions of fans. Sandé is even lending her pen to Alicia’s forthcoming fifth album. The law of attraction is real!
“I mean, when I was 16 and saw that Alicia show, there’s no way I could have imagined I’d one day find myself working with her, but now I am. I believe in just putting your hopes and ambitions out there and letting them fly. If I had any advice for others, it’d be just that.”
