14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys set Toronto’s Sony Centre on fire for the “Hope Rising!” benefit concert. Alicia, along with K’naan, Angelique Kidjo and more, performed to raise AIDS awareness.
Stephen Lewis, the head of the foundation, gave Alicia an introduction fit for a superwoman.
“[Keys is] staggeringly different from other celebrities … There’s always a touch of self-promotion and self-aggrandizement in what many of them do.” For Keys, he said, “There’s no self-indulgence.”
Jordana Levine, an entertainment journalist at the concert, described Keys’ performances as “breathtaking.” Her soulful melodies and powerful voice made it “hard to remember what the evening was even about.” She went on to say Keys should have been the finale – soon after her performance the crowd began to thin out.
