Atlanta’s very own, Sean Garrett “The Pen”, has released his official mixtape, The Inkwell. The Inkwell is hosted by DJ Green Lantern and has a slew of features. Sean Garrett is most notable for his writing skills: Ciara’s “Goodies”, Chris Brown’s “Run It”, Teairra Mari’s “Make Her Feel Good”, Usher’s “Yeah”, Mario’s “Break Up”, Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack”, and many more. He also produced several of Beyoncé’s hits alongside superproducer Swizz Beats: “Ring the Alarm”, “Get Me Bodied”, “Upgrade U”, “Check On It”, “Diva”, and “Video Phone”.
SN: The Album artwork is SICK!
Intro – The mixtape begins with a compilation of hits Sean “inked”. This could have been a masterpiece had the DJ shut-up. A
Writer Rider – S.G. rhymes over a hip-hop beat, with a sample of Jay-Z’s “You’re Welcome in the background. It sounds like Jay-Z is saying “I’m a writer and a rhymer”. C
Strip Club - As the song title implies, he’s describing what happens when he goes to the strip club. Assisted by Soulja Boy. C
Woah Woah – This isn’t a bad track, but it’s not for him. Roscoe Dash adds a verse, but I would expect this to be his track featuring S.G. shrugs D
Come Til My Girl – He’s talking about cumming and…idk. This track would be better suited for someone else. Fabolous is featured on this track. C
She Geeked – Dope beat, ill verses from Gucci Mane and Tyga…this is definitely his lane. He should continue doing features in my opinion. Video Below A
Wait – Again, this sound like it should be Rocko’s track featuring Sean Garrett. I like the track, minus all the auto-tune. B
Find Love - I like this track. Very chill R&B track with a mid-tempo beat. Drake drops a verse on the track. B
Oh My God – This song had potential. I wish I could understand what he’s saying… C
Get It All – S.G. and Nicki Minaj team up again for this cool track. I really like the piano in the production. Video B+
Girls On Girls – I didn’t like this track at all. Even Lil Wayne couldn’t save this song. F
Summer Love – The beat is crazy! It features Bun B and Yo Gotti. Cool Track. B
Stoopid – …. F
Hood Of My Car – I’m sure you can guess what he’s talking about. For some reason I hear Lloyd singing this…he would have definitely took this track to the next level. C
One Day (Ballad) - A for effort, that’s about it. Sounds like something Ne-Yo would sing. D
Obviously Sean Garrett is a brilliant writer of hits and he has an ear for production, but he needs to extend that knowledge to his own work. I’m not saying he can’t make it as a solo artist, but he needs to know what works for him. Right now I see him excelling more as a featured artist. Songs like “Break Up” and “She’s Geeked” are the type of songs he should be releasing. A lot of the songs featured on “The Inkwell” has a lot of potential, but they are missing some important flare. “The Pen” should work on having a more distinctive sound without much use of auto-tune and see where that takes him. Overall I’ll give “The Inkwell” a D.
