I don’t know where to start with this ambitious artist…she’s like the female Andre 3000 with a splash of Cee-Lo. I listen to Janelle Monáe, and I’m mesmerized by her creativity. She’s a breath of fresh air.
The video was done in a single take and despite the fact that she was lip synching, her raw emotions seeped through. When singing such a passionate song about having a cold war within yourself and society, emotions are expected to flare up. It began during the most personal part of the song: “I was made to believe.. there’s something wrong with me/ And it hurts my heart.” I just want to hug her.
It’s amazing how a video with no story line, no choreography, and no wardrobe could make such an impact. Janelle is a force.
